Karakaya
A village of nature and views
“This view is born again every morning.”
About the Village
Karakaya is one of the most striking villages of the region, with its nature, history and unique views.
The information on this page will grow over time through villagers’ accounts, archive records and contributions from volunteers.
Location & Geography
Karakaya shares a common landscape with the other four villages. The surrounding hills, streams and farmland shape both the layout of the village and the rhythm of life here.
The climate is continental, with cold winters and hot, dry summers, well suited to the region’s orchards, apricots above all.
Origin of the Name
The village’s name, any older names and the stories behind them will appear here.
If you have information or documents on this subject, please share them with us.
History
The founding of the village, its administrative past, key events and turning points will be told here, based on archive documents and the accounts of our elders.
A timeline will trace the story from Ottoman records through the Republican era and periods of migration to the present day.

Population & Settlement
How the population has changed over the years, the neighbourhoods and the layout of the settlement will be described here. The difference between winter and summer populations also tells the story of migration to the city and back.
Culture & Traditions
Weddings, religious holidays, imece (collective work), shared meals and local customs make up the village’s cultural identity. Here we record the traditions that are still alive and those at risk of being forgotten.
Land, Farming & Local Produce
Apricot orchards, vineyards, wheat and tobacco fields, livestock and home-made produce shape the village’s livelihood and cuisine. Local products and ways of producing them will be introduced here.
People & Memories
Memories of the village elders, people who grew up here and recollections passed down through generations will appear in this section. Completed interviews will also be published on the People’s Stories page.
Notable Places & Buildings
The mosque, fountains, old stone houses, mills, bridges and other places that hold a place in the village’s memory will be shown here with photos and short stories.

Photos, Videos & Documents
Old and new photographs, videos and documents about the village will be collected here as an archive.
